How to Join the NSW RFS

Volunteer Membership

  • There’s a formal application process: you’ll fill out a volunteer membership form, complete an interview, and for people over 16, they do a National Police Check.

Join the NSW RFS - NSW Rural Fire Service

  • If your application is accepted, you begin as a probationary member (minimum of six months) before becoming an “ordinary” member.
  • Training is provided by the RFS, free of charge, and covers operational firefighting, safety, PPE and more.

  • For younger people:
    • Juniors (12–15): Can join and do training, but don’t respond to emergencies.
    • 16–17 year olds: Can be ordinary members (with parental consent) and attend incidents once trained.

Types of Roles in the NSW RFS

Volunteering Roles, there is a role for everyone.

  • Operational Volunteer: Fighting fires, attending incidents (bushfires, structure fires, storms, searches, etc.).
  • Support Roles: Not all volunteers fight fires — some help with community engagement, admin, logistics, fundraising, training, etc.
  • Youth/Cadet Roles: As noted, younger members can join as juniors or cadets.
